Disculpeme (Excuse Me) for my Jehovah’s Witness upbringing
This is one of my favorite stories…
Luke 10:38-42 English Standard Version
Verse 38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus[a] entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[b] Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
For the past seven years or so, I’ve been a fanboy of Richard Rudd’s Gene Keys. Gene Keys is an offshoot, a spin off, as it were to Human Design. He says that only two things are left as legacy: Children and Stories. I agree wholeheartedly.
How many origin stories aka prequels has the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lured us to see over the past decades? Sigh.
Revolutionary act this story of Jesus, Mary & Martha. First of all, women were seen as unclean (Red Tent for when they bled) and temptors (hello, Eve). Men were seen as elevated and spiritual. So, for this man of God to speak to women about spiritual acts---revolutionary (period). Mary saw this immediately. Martha tended to her duties as homemaker. Remember, hospitality was HUGE back in this day (Sodom & Gomorrah, just saying). Anyway, I distracted myself. I maintain that Mary and Martha symbolize one aspect of two women.

Two aspects at times in conflict, that’s our left brained and intellectual side with our right brained wholistic side. Attached to the facts and proving its superiority--how many times do you say ‘I’m so busy’? And, your busyness is said in a tone of superiority and importance. Hello, Martha. Every mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) knows this internal conflict: for every thought to move or act, there’s an equal and opposite impulse to rest and flow.
While Mary would be a classic Pisces and Gemini archetype seeing the big picture--this holy man is speaking with us women! Martha would be a Virgo and Sagittarius (I’m so sure she thought she’d sit and listen once the kitchen and food is up to her perfected vision, right?)
Every holiday season (no matter how much or little you celebrate) is a conflation of the Mary/Martha story. Especially this Sagittarius New Moon of 2023 brings this potential conflict into stark relief like being out in the Sun without sunscreen. Let me elucidate the Mary and Martha conflict aka block to relaxing into the Wholeness that Our Raw Material promises with conscious practice.
Sagittarius Sun---with all its radiance and ‘more the merrier’ expansive focus, these plucky folx still need the applause of their chosen audiences. They can collect people through lavish parties or having a number of followers (Sag Taylor Swift, happy bday, BTW! 275 million IG and counting, yes?) There is nothing wrong with wanting recognition for large acts of kindness or the grand gesture. It’s only sus to this Scorpio, when my feelings and observational intellect put together that’s ‘quantity over quality’. Sigh 😕
Retrograde motion of Mercury in resourceful Capricorn/Sagittarius until January 13, 2024. The Mary side wants all gifts to have a spiritual meaning…’it’s the thought that counts, yes?’ Our inner Marthas are looking at the costs of each gift, our credit card balances and what do he/she/they give to us ‘is it naughty or nice memes, yes? ‘Pause, breathe and check your ego’s intent at each shopping mall or Internet ‘add to cart’ message, for sure. If you don’t merge Mary and Martha, that credit card balance in #aquariusseason will have your thoughts joining those who lose hope and begin to have suicidal ideations. Ok, so I’m using drama to highlight something. How is this for diplomatic heat---you begin to make a mental list of where you feel you belong, you count how much you spent (Martha) but weigh that against do you really feel accepted (Mary)? Sigh
Sun (radiant ego) and Moon (instinctive attachments) merge in Sag (meaning of all New Moons, hello) square (causing tension to the unexamined instinctive folx) in Neptune (fake news or oneness insights) in home sign of magical thinking Pisces. Reread the Mary/Martha story in multiple translations, ok? Your life may be built on delusional beliefs which are adjacent to the physical world. Does your bank account, job or house define you? Name three intangible assets (aka virtues) that you exhibit daily---no matter if Jesus shows up or not. Sigh.
Venus/Athena sharing space in Scorpio. When the Goddess of Love merges with a defensive and asexual Athena, a spectrum of dependency, codependency and reciprocity is created. Allow your instincts to connect to guide you. Usually it will center around your chosen mode of expressing your vulnerabilities. Talk to your owl (your wise voice of inner truth). Give Venus an opportunity to join your physical desire (root & sacral chakra) to your (solar plexus chakra) to blend in your expansive heart. Refuse to refer to yourself as a ‘control freak’. Instead get on your own emotional spectrum and blurt out your heartfelt truth. Trust that we’ll know when/if you’ve committed an offense. Risk being canceled, Martha, cuz Mary wouldn’t give a Goddamn. Sigh.
Let’s return to Mercury in retrograde motion speaking to Pragmatic Saturn in Mystical Pisces. Remember the mutable signs live with Mary/Martha cognitive dissonance every moment. Let’s focus some compassionate intentions their way (and that includes you Martha). Or does Mary needs some self-care? Whatever. Saturn in Pisces is teaching all of us to create a spiritual practice. No need to broadcast your inner worth. To those with an integrated Mary/Martha gaze, we will see your improvements. Your process magnetizes and softens us into flowing much like those old ass sea turtles in Finding Nemo. What we gon’ do with all this lovin’? Play music and dance. Sigh.
Mars in Sagittarius announcing our Solar radiance and consciousness. Ouch. Well, this cantankerous warrior of philosophical friction can bring us down into fighting over details that really don’t matter or he can incite us to dance, rap, sign and talk trash while playing table games. When our individualized selves (both Mary and Martha had separate ego/Mars experiences in front of Jesus as unifying soul energy) listen to how both action (Martha) and rest (Mary) are necessary---we can live from our Wholeness (each moment is perfect as it is).
Uranus (The Awakener) and Jupiter (The Philosopher King) in permanence seeking Taurus we all can believe and behave as if our God is better than other people’s Gods. Assess how you spend (love the money metaphor in this word!) your time and energy (Values/Week Seven in www.ourrawmaterial.com) Integrate how you believe you should spend your time (Ideals/Week Seven).Sigh and breathe.
Did you ‘sigh and breathe’ as suggested in M & M (Mary & Martha) rules? If not, my soul roots itself in timelessness. Sigh and long cleansing breath taken. Twice (I admit I’m showing off a little, Martha) Again, Mary simply basks in my expansively warming energies. Let Uranus shake up your daily routines. Recognize and acknowledge how things go awry. ‘God laughs at the plans of mice and men’. If you’re truly identifying with Martha, you’ll give me the correct translation of this statement in the comment section.
Who plays the role of Mary or Martha in your daily lives? Imagine wars (past, present and future) : which side is Mary? Martha? Or Jesus as Revolutionary? Reformer? Peacemaker?
